Healing Opportunities
Responding to a need for caregiver support services by the hospice community, in January 2002, Healing Opportunities created Compassionate Care for Caregivers (CCC) in Santa Barbara, California. Compassionate Care provides benevolent in-home/on-site massage, yoga, acupuncture and stress management education to family and professional caregivers of people suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Through CCC, family caregivers, hospice volunteers, nurses, social workers, counselors and administrators have the opportunity to improve their own well-being and to learn skills for stress management and self-care while in the midst of caring for others. The CCC program has created a wellness model that integrates respite care with effective treatment and prevention of stress related ailments common to caregivers. Compassionate Care services are provided free of charge, serving families that could otherwise not afford this level of care. Clients are referred by social workers and counselors at Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc., Visiting Nurse Hospice Care and Cancer Center of Santa Barbara.

Included in their programs, is therapeutic yoga for the Employee Health and Wellness Departments at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara where Scott and Chandra teach restorative yoga and meditation to cancer patients and health care practitioners.
