foundational track 2019

Foundational Track 2019

with Scott Blossom & Jonny Nobleza

Overview

Establishing a mature ground of mental, somatic, and energetic practice is an essential but often overlooked element on the yoga path. This foundational track will introduce the basic principles of Shadow Yoga as well as the practice of the first two prelude forms. The Continuing Prelude Studies course will then give students the opportunity to review and refine their understanding and practice of these preliminary forms. The preludes are designed to unfold and inform as practitioners evolve over a number of years.

Course Descriptions

Shadow Yoga Basics

In this workshop you will be introduced to the fundamentals of Shadow Yoga, including uddiyana bandha kriya and the warm-up practices that are called dasha chalanam and jiva chalanam. This course is a prerequisite for all other Shadow Yoga Prelude Forms. All levels are welcome.

Chaya Sanchalanam (Churning the Shadow Warrior)

The spiraling and circular movements of the second Shadow Yoga prelude develop coordination of the limbs and the ability to rhythmically circulate the pranic force through the body. It removes energetic obstructions in the waist and legs, makes the body light, and promotes healthy digestion and elimination.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Shadow Yoga warm-ups, dasha chalanam and jiva chalanam.

Balakrama (Stepping into Strength)

In this series, you will be introduced to the first of the Shadow Yoga Preludes, called Balakrama (Stepping Into Strength). It is a dynamic bone-strengthening sequence, which actively engages one's center (navel region), hands, feet, and breath. This form removes marma (energetic obstructions) from the legs and pelvis to free the downward flow of prana, detoxify the blood, and strengthen the lungs. Once the Chaya Sanchalam Prelude has been taught, students will be introduced to the seated work of asana vinyasa.

*Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Shadow Yoga warm-ups, dasha chalanam and jiva chalanam.

Continuing Prelude Studies

The preludes of the Shadow Yoga practice are utilized to prepare one’s energetic, mental, and physical bodies for subsequent seated and yoga asana practices. Embodied fluency in the applications of these forms is accomplished through patience and consistency. This series will explore ways to approach and practice deeper listening and refinement of movement and stances in the prelude forms.

This series is open to all levels of students who have completed any Shadow Yoga prelude course.
