shadow yoga courses

course descriptions

shadow yoga, founded by zhander remete, is a hatha yoga system that utilizes rhythmic breathing, bandhas (energetic locks) and the system of marma (vital junctions) to free the peripheral body of its energetic obstructions and to ignite our inner fire for healing and meditation. shadow yoga consists of circular and spiraling movements, warrior stances, and sun salutation forms that prepare students to safely and effectively practice the more advanced limbs of hatha yoga.

introduction to shadow yoga weekend workshops
this workshop format provides students with an opportunity to learn or review the shadow yoga warm-ups called "dasha chalanam" and "jiva chalanam," as well as the fundamentals of the shadow yoga style. workshops usually take place on weekends throughout the year. after completing this workshop, students may enter the basics series or one of the prelude series at the teacher's discretion.

the following courses are taught in a series format so that students learn the practice in a step-by-step manner

shadow yoga morning series...

shadow yoga basics
in this series you will be introduced to the fundamentals of shadow yoga, including the warm-ups called "dasha chalanam" and "jiva chalanam." this course is a prerequisite for all other shadow yoga prelude forms. all levels are welcome.

The Preludes...

balakrama prelude - stepping into strength
balakrama is a dynamic bone strengthening form, which actively engages one's center (navel region), hands, feet, and breath. this form removes marma (energetic obstructions) from the legs and pelvis to free the downward flow of prana, detoxify the blood, and strengthen the lungs. this course is recommended for students who have completed the shadow yoga basics course.

chaya yoddha sanchalanam prelude - churning of the shadow warrior
the spiraling and circular movements in this form develop coordination of the limbs and the ability to rhythmically circulate the pranic force through the body. it removes energetic obstructions in the waist and legs, makes the body light, and promotes healthy digestion and elimination. this course is recommended for students who have completed the shadow yoga basics course.

kartikkeya mandalam prelude - garland of light
this advanced form consists of demanding stance and waist work, removes marma from the chest and shoulders, and prepares the body for the primary seated asanas. it is highly recommended that you have been working with the balakrama or chaya yoddha sanchalanam prelude consistently for at least six months before taking this course.

further shadow yoga courses...
{these courses require that students know at least one prelude}

individualized practice
in this course each student is given an individualized sequence of asanas based on their particular needs and capacities. the class schedule is structured so that students arrive to class at different times and work at their own pace to support their natural rhythm of practice and ensure one-on-one attention in each class. this type of format is the most effective way to move through the challenges that each of us face in practice, prevent injury, and strengthen personal commitment and understanding. these courses are by application only. please contact scott & chandra at shunyatayoga@gmail.com to apply.
prerequisite: students must have at least one shadow yoga prelude memorized.

primary asana
this course builds upon the foundation that is laid in the shadow yoga preludes and is suitable for all levels of students who have knowledge of at least one prelude form. students will be introduced to traditional primary asanas and their appropriate vinyasas to further refine the circulation of the life force through the hips and spine, strengthen respiration and enkindle the agni (internal fire). prerequisite: knowledge of at least one shadow yoga prelude.

shadow yoga asana vinyasa
a modified form of one of the three preludes will be taught in order to prepare the practitioner for the seated practice of asana vinyasa. prerequisite: students must know at least one prelude to attend this course.

nṛtta sādhanā
rhythmic dance and its practice...

"Nṛtta is that sādhanā through which the sadhaka (aspirant) rediscovers the rhythmic life currents hidden in the body’s folds and limbs by means of unimposed natural positioning. out of the one hundred and eight karanas mentioned in the natya shastra, not more than thirty-six karanas are used for the purpose of self cultivation."  - Shandor Remete

nṛtta sādhanā
the eight palms(short form)

this practice is the first step in learning nṛtta sādhanā. it is a natural extension of shadow yoga and is taught to those who have thoroughly learned and practiced all three prelude forms.

also known as the sacred dance of lord shiva, nṛtta sādhanā is designed to impart gracefulness by rediscovering the rhythmic life currents hidden in the body’s folds and limbs by means of unimposed natural positioning.

the eight palms course is a prerequisite for learning the nṛtta sādhanā long form which is taught exclusively by emma balnaves and zhander remete.
